International Weekend in New York City

International Weekend began with a Goodwill Reception on Thursday, October 26 at the Cornell Club in New York City. New York members welcomed fellow members from around the globe.

On October 27, members and guest honored Solar Impulse Pilot André Borschberg at a black-tie event held at the historic Penn Club in New York City. The evening began with a wonderful cocktail hour where members and guests had a chance to meet Mr. Borschberg and enjoy each other’s company. John Philip Sousa’s Circumnavigators Club March welcomed everyone into the dining room to be seated.

International President Ellen Parke welcomed members and guests to this historic event. Past President and Magellan Award Committee Chair Howard Matson gave his introductory remarks and called to the podium the Officers, Governors, Past Presidents, Chapter Presidents and representatives of the Circumnavigators Club to present the Order of Magellan to André Borschberg.

Circumnavigators and North Korea…

Many club members have traveled to North Korea over the past many years. With the newsworthiness of travel to this forbidding country, our club can offer a unique perspective. We are planning a report for the next issue of The LOG. If you have been to North Korea, please contact David Mink by email davidamink@me.com. All names will be kept strictly confidential and anonymous upon request. Some members who went to North Korea had to sign an agreement not to write about their trip in order to protect the tour company.

A member who wishes to remain anonymous took this shot in North Korea.

The LOG needs your help…

We are looking for travel info from our members for the column All Over the Map. Just drop us a line by email to David at the above address or Editor Tracy Sancilio at info@circumnavigators.org.

Photo contest postponed…

For technical reasons our Photo Contest has been postponed until later in the year. Details to follow.

If you have been to Oktoberfest in Munich, you will be welcome to share your experience. The reservation form can be found here, or get your tickets online here.

The Magellan Award dinner is coming up on October 27th to honor explorer and adventurer Andre Borschberg, co-pilot of Solar Impulse 2, which circumnavigated the globe using only solar power. The black-tie event will be held at the Penn Club in New York City. Further information will be posted on the website and an invitation will be mailed soon.

We are working on the next LOG

Scheduled for early December, we want input from Circumnavigators for our columns All Over the Map and Scuttlebutt. Just send us a line or two or a photo about recent trips or planned ones.

Have you been to North Korea?

We would like to hear from our members who have traveled to North Korea for a story about travel to this country that generates so many headlines. Please contact David Mink at davidamink@me.com. We will keep information anonymous if requested.

Circumnavigator Podell takes his first cruise

After 60 years of travel, Author and Adventurer Albert Podell took his first cruise, rounding Cape Horn. His account of the trip will be published in International Travel News (ITN). The cruise was not all fun and games, as Albert describes it. You can read his story here.

Albert poses on an ice floe in this obvious fake shot off the coast of South America.

The Last Shot

Circumnavigators Ann Swinford and Mo Elfouly, of the Michigan Chapter visited Idaho Falls, Idaho for the solar eclipse on September 13. As Ann describes it, “The temperature dropped 20 degrees, women around me put on sweaters.  I saw a flock of seagulls heading to roost and Venus and the stars came out. People were quiet.  We had two minutes of this mystery when the sun came back.   I nearly shouted, “Do it again!” Mo shot this stunning shot of the event.

Luck to you!
