Circumnavigators in the News…

Scott Kelly

Scott Kelly with Dottie Mink at Award Ceremony

Scott_Kelly[1]2012 Order of Magellan recipient and honorary member Scott Kelly has arrived at the International Space Station at the beginning of his year in space. NASA has poetically termed his mission a test  of the limits of “human research, space exploration and human spirit”. When Kelly received the Club’s highest honor, he talked about his upcoming year in space and its challenges. Scott’s co-honoree, twin brother Mark Kelly, will be monitored on earth to compare the physical differences with his brother. Follow this link for more on Scott.

Our 1999 Order of Magellan honoree Bertrand Piccard in now on his historic attempt to circumnavigate onboard Solar Impulse 2, the first solar powered aircraft. Along with Andre Borchberg, the pioneers are now headed over the Himalayas for China, then the most perilous part of the trip across the Pacific Ocean. If all goes as planned, the circumnavigation will take five months. We will be tracking Solar Impulse along the way. Luck to you, Scott, Bertrand and Andre!!

(UPDATE:  Solar Impulse 2 has landed safely in China.)

Magellan Event in Washington DC…

Circumnavigators are looking forward to the Order of Magellan presentation to journalist Ann Compton on April 11. A fascinating interview with Ann is available on the following link http://www.c-span.org/video/?322402-1/qa-ann-compton. It is going to be an exciting evening.

Congratulations to Naples…

The Naples Chapter recently held a successful fundraising event for the Circumnavigators Club Foundation. Artist, Author & Photographer Helene Gaillet de Neergaard gave a wonderful presentation. Foundation grantee and Dean of Brandeis University Bruce Magid traveled from snowy Boston to Naples to represent the Foundation.

The blockbuster movie Unbroken premiered on Christmas Day. Based on the bestseller book, it tells the story of World War II hero Louis Zamperini, who died in 2014. Our own Tom Maher, International Governor and Naples member, had a close encounter with Zamperini at the 2000 Olympics. Tom wrote about the story for The Log that year. Tom fondly remembers his meeting with a true hero.

An Afternoon with Don Parrish

We have written a lot lately about our most travelled member, Don Parrish. Our most recent profile of Don is in the most recent issue of The Log, which can be accessed on this page. Another profile of Don recently ran on the web site www.besttravelled.com. You can read the story by going to this link. It is a good story, and a good web site for our members to enjoy.

Mark your calendars for 2015

If you are visiting Florida this winter from colder climes, our chapters in Naples, Palm Beach and Miami will always welcome you to their events.

Specifically, the International Board of Governors will hold its March meeting in conjunction with the Naples Chapter meeting on Sunday, March 8. Members and visitors will have the chance to meet International President Ellen Parke and many of the Governors, as well as the pleasure of a brunch meeting with our Naples Chapter.

On Saturday, April 11, Award-winning Journalist Ann Compton will receive the Order of Magellan at our event in Washington DC.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 29, in New York City. Check with headquarters for more information on these important events.

The Last Shot

This writer decided to use one of his own photos to close out January Circumbits. Winter may be beautiful, but this scene was one that helped prompt our move to Southwest Florida.

2014 Summer The Log

Do you want to be a cover photographer?

The next issue of The Log is scheduled for late fall. In a new tradition, we will be featuring a cover with a member photo. The Log Advisory Panel will select the cover photo from submissions by our members. Just send us your best recent shot and it will be considered for the cover. We are looking for photos taken in the past year, and any subject will be considered. Please just send one photo by email attachment to club@circumnavigators.org. Join Washington member Jennifer Teague (sailboat) and Naples member Roger Baker (lions) as cover photographers.

It’s August already?

Where did this summer go? This issue of Circumbits is coming from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where this writer has vacationed for more than 40 years. It’s a wonder place, if you have never visited. As mentioned many times, we want to share our stories, travel recommendations and photos with our International membership. Please let us know where you have been or where you are going. The Circumnavigators Club was built on this tradition of sharing experiences, so please join in.

Kenai King 7-2-08To All Circumnavigators in the cold climates, welcome to spring! You deserve a break from the past winter.

This month, the Club is preparing for it Annual Meeting at headquarters in the Yale Club. We have an exciting speaker for the event, Kip Knudson who will present “Around the World and North to the Future.” It’s the story of how a Circumnavigator Foundation grant led to a life in Alaska.

The meeting will be held on Friday, May 30, beginning at noon. Members will be receiving invitations, as well as ballots, in the mail, and we hope many can join us for a weekend in New York City.

The next issue of The Log will be arriving next month. There is still time to get a blurb in about your recent or planned trips for “All Over the Map” column or any news for Scuttlebutt. Please send a line or two to Tracy by email to Headquarters.

Luck to you!

DC Chapter Luncheon held Feb. 11

Chapter Spotlight, Events, Foundation, On The Road, The Blog Comments Off on DC Chapter Luncheon held Feb. 11
Feb 272014

Japan and Japanese food was the focus of a grand luncheon among D.C. Chapter members in late February.  Our Asian food tastes are expanding with recent luncheons featuring Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean and now Japanese cuisine.  Mica Dumas from the Japan-American Society came dressed in a traditional kimono and gave a slide presentation of Japanese society, culture, food, and sights.  She lived in Japan for 13 years and then 7 years in Germany: a real world traveler.  As an added treat, each of us received a genuine Japanese red fan, and a Japanese New Year red envelope with good luck coin.

Harmonie Kobanghe, our 2014 Foundation Grantee told the Chapter about her planned circumnavigation and her study of the role of women in improving agricultural economies by increased land tenure.  She is the first French citizen chosen from Georgetown University for a Foundation grant; her family was originally from the Congo.

And, we had a short talk from Alex Bijol from Bled, Slovenia, a guest of Bill Ashley.  Alex told us about Slovenia and the thrill of his first visit to the United States.  We discussed plans for a Persian Nowruz spring party but had to cancel it as the musicians and dancers decided not to come to the restaurant to perform this year.  We are looking at other events for our annual ‘Spring into Summer’ luncheon.

We held our biannual elections, reelecting Samuel Watson as president, Jennifer Teague as vice president and treasurer, and electing Samuel McAleese as our new secretary, all for two years.  Sam McAleese was a Foundation grantee from the Chicago Chapter.

Recent travelers included Ray Olson going to Kuwait and the ‘lovely’ Kuwait International Airport and also to Thailand; Bill Ashley went on several Caribbean cruises over the Christmas holidays; Betsy and Emil Ruderfer went to Chile and Argentina over the New Year holidays; and, Virginia May took another Caribbean cruise (one of many she has taken on Cunard ships to the Caribbean and around the world).
