Circumnavigators in the News…

Scott Kelly

Scott Kelly with Dottie Mink at Award Ceremony

Scott_Kelly[1]2012 Order of Magellan recipient and honorary member Scott Kelly has arrived at the International Space Station at the beginning of his year in space. NASA has poetically termed his mission a test  of the limits of “human research, space exploration and human spirit”. When Kelly received the Club’s highest honor, he talked about his upcoming year in space and its challenges. Scott’s co-honoree, twin brother Mark Kelly, will be monitored on earth to compare the physical differences with his brother. Follow this link for more on Scott.

Our 1999 Order of Magellan honoree Bertrand Piccard in now on his historic attempt to circumnavigate onboard Solar Impulse 2, the first solar powered aircraft. Along with Andre Borchberg, the pioneers are now headed over the Himalayas for China, then the most perilous part of the trip across the Pacific Ocean. If all goes as planned, the circumnavigation will take five months. We will be tracking Solar Impulse along the way. Luck to you, Scott, Bertrand and Andre!!

(UPDATE:  Solar Impulse 2 has landed safely in China.)

Gulfshore Life magazine has an article about the Club….

A Travel Club for the Truly Adventurous

by David Sendler

You learn the darnedest things just chatting with people at parties here. At one such event, I ran into Moira Fennessey and pretty soon she was telling me about her membership in the Circumnavigators Club of Naples. It seems we have 125 local people who have traveled all the way around the globe in one direction (you can do it in more than one segment) and love to tell each other about their adventures.

And, boy, are there stories…..

Pound Ridge’s Charlie Blaisdell, Former FBI Agent, Hunted Nazis And Helped Jail Mobsters

At 98, local lawyer Charles “Charlie” Blaisdell has plenty of stories to tell.

BY KEVIN F. MCMURRAY
Westchester Magazine, April 2014

n 1980, then-Westchester County Executive Ed Michaelian conversed with old friend and colleague Charles “Charlie” Blaisdell, a 30-year resident of Pound Ridge and the town’s legal counsel for nine years, about Blaisdell’s intentions of retiring at the age of 65. “Ed told me I shouldn’t retire,” he recalls. “So I asked him what he had in mind.”

At Michaelian’s behest, Blaisdell was hired as a lawyer at the law firm Bleakley Platt & Schmidt in White Plains. Blaisdell figured he would stay at the job maybe three years or so before he retired. Thirty-three years later, he’s  still there and, at the age of 98, is as sharp and as dedicated as ever.

Through friendship, to leave this world a little better than we found it.

As members of the Circumnavigators Club, many of us know others who travel extensively as well. Our friends — new and old — may value travel the way we do. But do we spread the word about The Circumnavigators Club? And, how do we do so? Member Josh Datko has blogged about The Club as a way of spreading the word. Read it here. Do you tell others about Circumnavigators? Drop us a line and let us know how you introduce others about us.
