HAPPY NEW YEAR!…

Best wishes for a Happy New Year to all Circumnavigators, Family and Friends. Our Club has now entered its 115th year, and we look forward to another year of exciting travels and events. It is worth noting that when the new U.S. President is inaugurated later this month, there will have been 20 Presidents during the lifetime of the Club, beginning with Teddy Roosevelt. Astounding advances in travel and communications have made the world a lot smaller than in those years. On the other hand, political unrest and terrorism have made the world a lot larger, with many popular destinations now inaccessible. So, our Club mission is as important as ever — to make the world better through friendship and understanding.

John & Annie Glenn with Jeff & Elizabeth Kelly

FAREWELL TO JOHN GLENN…

The world lost a number of outstanding people in 2016, among them Circumnavigator John Glenn. In 2001, Senator Glenn received our highest honor, the Order of Magellan, in “recognition of his lifetime contributions to the exploration of space and leadership of his country.”  250 Circumnavigators and guests packed the Union League Club as President Jeff Kelly presented Senator Glenn with his award. The world lost a hero and statesman, and the Club lost one of its most prestigious members.

Club members toured historic ship

Circumnavigators and guests toured the newly restored historic Wavertree Ship at the South Street Seaport in New York City on September 27th. Captain Jonathan Boulware, Executive Director of the Seaport Museum, led a guided tour followed by dinner at the India House. Captain Boulware’s presentation left guests with a newfound appreciation of the life of the ship Wavertree and the importance of the South Street Seaport to modern New York City.

solarimpulse4Congratulations to the Solar Impulse 2 team!

Mission Complete…

Bertrand Piccard, recipient of the Club’s 1999 Order of Magellan for his circumnavigation by hot air balloon, landed the solar-powered aircraft, the Solar Impulse 2, in Abu Dhabi on July 26, 2016.  Piccard and his fellow Swiss pilot, Andre Borschberg, began their round-the-world journey in March 2015.  Taking turns piloting the single-seat plane, they made the trip in 16 legs without using any fuel.  The trip had been interrupted for nine months because the batteries were damaged during the longest leg — five days from Japan to Hawaii.  In interviews on Tuesday, Piccard expressed his belief that the accomplishment demonstrates that clean technologies can be adapted to make the world more energy efficient.

Singapore Chapter

The Singapore Chapter held its annual mid-year dinner at the fabulous Sentosa Golf Club. A delicious dinner and excellent band accompanied by members singing their hearts out.

In The LOG

We hope you have enjoyed the latest copy of The LOG. The staff appreciates feedback and comments from Circumnavigators, so let us know what you think! Remember you can also read The LOG on this website. The issue had a great story by Circum Fred Myers about his circumnavigation on a weekend. We neglected that the woman chatting with Fred in the photo is Summer Bartholomew, Miss U.S.A. for 1975. Fred notes that “her charm, good looks and sense of adventure made her a hit with everyone on the flight. In fact, in later years she went on to do well as an actress.”

Also, start reviewing your photos to enter the 2016 Foundation Photo Contest (see last year’s entries here).

A tribute to Charlie…

Circumnavigator and New Yorker Brad Vogel had a piece published in the New York Times Metropolitan Diary column about the 100th birthday celebration for Past President Charlie Blaisdell at a Club event in December.  Read it here.

Over the Horizon…

We are sorry to report the passing of Evelyn Peterson. As past president Howard Matson writes: “Evelyn truly exemplified the title of ‘First Lady’ of the Circumnavigators Club. Along with her late husband (Past President) Bob, she was held in the highest regard and esteem by all of the Club’s members.” The Petersons were very active in the Club and Foundation as philanthropists, volunteers and hosts. Evelyn died on January 8 at her home in Palm Beach, Florida. Our deepest sympathy to her sons Jeffrey, Bill, and Kent.

Matt and Shaesta

Aviators get together…

Our own Matt Guthmiller, world record holder as the youngest person to fly solo around the world, recently met with Shaesta Waiz, who is setting off later this year on her attempt to become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world. The two met with Circumnavigator and Club governor Angela McLean in Wichita, Kansas. Matt later flew to Naples, Florida, and addressed the Naples Chapter.

The Last Shot

Magellan honoree and honorary member Scott Kelly on his year in space took this stunning shot of Italy and the Alps.

Corrections

Our apologies to new members Roxanna Seely and Steven Fuller for mistakes in our Welcome Aboards section. The wrong photo was used for Roxanna and Steven’s bio was inadvertently omitted by a layout error. Both items will be corrected in the next issue and on the web site.

Roxanna Seely

Roxanna Seely

A lifelong resident of Jacksonville FL, Roxanna circumnavigated with her husband Fred (also a Circumnavigator) when she realized a long-held dream to see the “top of the world”—Mount Everest. She is active in the Junior League and the Colonial Dames.

Steven Fuller

Steven Fuller

Steven lives in Kansas City, Missouri where he practices law and has served as a judge. He has taken his love of travel seriously, having visited 255 countries and territories at last count. He is a Platinum member of the Travelers’ Century Club. Amazingly, he has run 190 marathons on all seven continents. He was the first American to run a marathon in all 50 states.
