Face of an Elephant
This photo, “Face of an Elephant,” was taken in Kruger National Park in South Africa. I was on a safari with my late son, Kel, when a bull elephant charged us. Kel and I were in a small sedan, and he was driving. When the elephant charged, vehicles were behind us, and we had nowhere to go. I told my son I would keep taking photos; if we were killed, at least there would be documentation. Fortunately, the elephant stopped three feet from our vehicle.
THIRD PLACE, Bill Girtman, Naples Chapter
Cheetah Alert
Last day of visit to private game preserve.  Only one animal of the big five I had not seen was the Cheetah. Suddenly out of the Jeep I saw him as he mounted the bent tree in the distance. I was the only one to get a clear shot as he was gone in an instant!

Live Oak
I visited over a dozen countries before my first trip to the American South. As I came to learn, its aesthetic charm and dark history are two sides of the same coin. The live oak is a symbol for both.
