Are you going to Washington DC?

Circumnavigators and guests are in store for a spectacular weekend when our historic Order of Magellan event is held in Washington DC on April 10-11. The main event will be on Saturday evening, April 11, honoring ground-breaking journalist Ann Compton. Hosted by our Washington DC Chapter, the Magellan event will be held at the famed Cosmos Club, which has counted among its members Presidents, Vice Presidents, Supreme Court justices and Nobel Prize winners.

If you did not receive your invitation, please contact Tracy at headquarters or see the PDF with details and reservation form here. For overnight accommodations, please note there are no longer rooms available at the Army and Navy Club. Please contact the Embassy Row Hotel at 855-893-1011.

The Log needs your help!

Veranasi

The next issue of The Log is in the works, and, as always, we need contributions from Circumnavigators.

Here are some things you can do:

Do you have a good photo for our photo spread or, perhaps, for the cover? The photo spread will have a “faces” theme, such as the one taken here by Roger Baker on a recent trip to India. If you have a good shot of someone you have encountered on your travels, please submit it for consideration. It does not have to be recent. Send your photo by email attachment to club@circumnavigators.org.

Regarding Roger’s photo, it was taken in Varanasi. Notice the pre-photo gratuity that the gentleman is holding his hand!

Let us know about your travels. Our All Over the Map column features the recent travels of our members. Send us a line or two about where you have traveled or where you are going. Photos of members “on the road” are welcome.

Also, the Scuttlebutt column reports news about members. Let us know if you have moved to a new location, gotten a degree, written a book, been honored by an organization. Photos welcome.

Do you have a travel story to share? Story ideas from members are always encouraged. Let us know if you have a story that can be developed into a piece for The Log. Please do not send completed stories. We will work with you to put it together.

Washington DC Chapter’s 30th Anniversary and Chinese New Year Celebration

On February 28, members and guests enjoyed a delicious lunch at Duangrat’s Thai restaurant in Northern Virginia. Four past Chapter Presidents attended (in the front row (from right to left) are Ellen Parke, Ray Olson, Anne Kennedy, and Jim Whalen).  C. Bill Billings spoke at the lunch about his experience as part of a team of Rotarians who built a suspension foot bridge across the Blue Nile gorge in a remote part of Ethiopia. It was a terrific way to celebrate the Washington DC Chapter’s 30th Anniversary!

Welcome to February

For those Circumnavigators living in the chilly climes, there is light at the end of the tunnel with Spring on its way. We have heard from many members who, as usual, have been spending the winter on the road. Our Club got an international press mention in the Huffington Post. The piece by William Chalmers asked Can there be a world’s greatest traveler? Yes!

Appearing on January 31, the story explores the “world” of serious travelers, and the Circumnavigators Club is mentioned first in a discussion of benchmark travel groups. Read the story here.

February Getaways—

Florida–Members who are looking to head to Florida this winter might want to join up with Naples Chapter members who are holding brunch events on Sunday, February 8 and Sunday, March 8. There will be interesting presentations and a chance to have a good time with the Club’s largest chapter. Members of the International Board of Governors will participate in the March meeting. More details are on the Naples Chapter web site: www.napleschaptercircumnavigatorsclub.com.

New York CityMembers and guests visiting New York City are invited to the Chinese New Year’s Party on Thursday, February 26. Celebrating the Year of the Green Sheep, the party will be held at the Evergreen Shanghai Restaurant in midtown. More information here.

Congratulations to the Washington DC Chapter

The Chapter will celebrate its 30th Anniversary along with the Lunar New Year on Saturday, February 8 at Duangrat’s Thai Restaurant in Falls Church VA. The speaker will be Circumnavigator Bill Billings who will talk about the building of a pedestrian suspension bridge over the Blue Nile River Gorge in the remote Ethiopian Highlands. One of the Club’s most active groups, the Chapter’s charter was issued in February 1985.

Best Wishes to Ellen Parke

International President Ellen Parke was hospitalized in January with complications of the flu. We are happy to report that Ellen is now out of the hospital and on the mend as she looks forward to some recuperation in sunny Arizona this month.

Remember the Magellan Event

Our major event, honoring ground-breaking journalist Ann Compton will be held in Washington DC on Saturday, April 11 at the Cosmos Club. Members will receive invitations in the mail shortly. Please plan to join us for this exciting occasion.

The Last Shot

Roger and Paula Baker, Naples Chapter members, are in India this month. Roger sent along this stunning architectural shot of the Hawa Mahal, the palace of Winds, in Jaipur. The structure dates back to 1799.

Welcome to 2015

As the Circumnavigators Club enters its 113th Year, the Board of Governors and Executive Director Tracy Sancilio wish all our members and friends a Happy New Year. Best wishes for a healthy, happy year and safe travels. Be mindful of keeping up our mission to make the world a better place through friendship and understanding. Our wonderful world needs all the help it can get.

Astronaut Scott Kelly, our 2012 Magellan Award recipient (along with his twin brother Mark) in 2012 was featured on a recent cover of Time. Scott becomes the eleventh Magellan honoree to be on a Time cover. The blockbuster movie Unbroken premiered on Christmas Day. Based on the bestseller book, it tells the story of World War II hero Louis Zamperini, who died in 2014. Our own Tom Maher, International Governor and Naples member, had a close encounter with Zamperini at the 2000 Olympics. Tom wrote about the story for The Log that year. Tom fondly remembers his meeting with a true hero.

An Afternoon with Don Parrish

We have written a lot lately about our most travelled member, Don Parrish. Our most recent profile of Don is in the most recent issue of The Log, which can be accessed on this page. Another profile of Don recently ran on the web site www.besttravelled.com. You can read the story by going to this link. It is a good story, and a good web site for our members to enjoy.

Mark your calendars for 2015

If you are visiting Florida this winter from colder climes, our chapters in Naples, Palm Beach and Miami will always welcome you to their events.

Specifically, the International Board of Governors will hold its March meeting in conjunction with the Naples Chapter meeting on Sunday, March 8. Members and visitors will have the chance to meet International President Ellen Parke and many of the Governors, as well as the pleasure of a brunch meeting with our Naples Chapter.

On Saturday, April 11, Award-winning Journalist Ann Compton will receive the Order of Magellan at our event in Washington DC.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 29, in New York City. Check with headquarters for more information on these important events.

The Last Shot

This writer decided to use one of his own photos to close out January Circumbits. Winter may be beautiful, but this scene was one that helped prompt our move to Southwest Florida.
