More Circumnavigators join our ranks

As the year 2014 comes to a close, it is worth noting that it was a banner year for membership. The number of new members nearly doubled from last year. The membership activity was helped by the Wall Street Journal story featuring the Circumnavigators Club. This story on Round the World travel brought the Club to the attention of a number of circumnavigators who inquired about joining. Membership was also aided by the spouse discount as noted below.

Discounted initiation fee for spouses extended

The Board of Governors has voted to extend the discount through 2015. An applicant sponsored by a spouse will pay an initiation fee of $50 instead of $150. This discount also applies to a married couple that joins at the same time. One spouse pays $150 and the other pays $50. Also, a new member applicant sponsored by a spouse will not require a seconding letter, in order to streamline the process.

Our newest members

The circumnavigators who join the Club always impress us. Every one has an interesting background and special talents and achievements. However, two new members have unique and outstanding accomplishments that need to be pointed out.

amelia2Amelia Earhart: circumnavigation record holder

Yes, you heard that right. Unrelated to her namesake, Amelia circumnavigated this summer by piloting her own plane—an achievement that, along with her name, garnered widespread international media coverage. At 31, she now holds the world record for the youngest woman to circumnavigate in a single-engine aircraft. She closely followed the route of the “original” Amelia Earhart who disappeared in 1937. Our new member lives in Denver and heads the Fly With Amelia Foundation. Members will be hearing more about her story in The Log.

Matt Guthmiller: Youngest pilot to solo circumnavigate

matt

A 19-year-old MIT student, Matt made it around the world by himself this summer and now holds the Guinness World Record for his fund-raising mission. He logged more than 30,000 miles on this 44-day trip, taking him to 15 countries and six continents. He flew a 1981 Beechcraft A36 Bonanza on this arduous journey. Members will learn more about the trip in The Log.

The Last Shot

Circumbits will feature a great photo each month to share with our members. This shot was taken by Sophie Classen, Naples Chapter member, in her backyard in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Groundbreaking Journalist to receive Magellan honor

magellan2014Distinguished news correspondent Ann Compton, recently retired after 40 years with ABC, will receive the Circumnavigators Club Order of Magellan. The event will be held in Washington, DC on April 11 at the Cosmos Club.

Compton was the first woman to cover the White House for a major television news organization. During her career, she covered seven Presidents and ten presidential campaigns. Traveling with Presidents, Vice Presidents and First Ladies, she travelled to all 50 states and six continents.

She received an Emmy for her coverage as the only broadcast reporter onboard Air Force One on day of the September 11th tragedy.

Members should mark their calendars to join this Magellan event, honoring Compton. She is sure to have some riveting historic stories.

More details to follow.

Magellan Event to be held in Nation’s Capital

The Washington, DC Chapter will host next year’s event—the first time the Magellan will be awarded outside of New York City. This new venue (not a permanent one) will allow attendees to enjoy Washington, DC in its springtime glory. Plans will be made for visitors to enjoy some of the sights of our Nation’s capital.

Visiting New York City for the holidays?

Circumnavigators are invited to join the New York Metro group for a holiday cocktail party at the Coffee House Club in midtown Manhattan on December 19. Click here to view and print the announcement.

thelog2014smDid you receive The Log?

The Log, with its distinctive island cover, has been mailed to all members.  Please contact Tracy at headquarters if your copy did not arrive. The entire issue of The Log can be viewed online by clicking the cover icon on this web page, or here.

If you decide not to save or pass on your copy, please don’t throw it away. Chapters can make good use of these copies to give to potential new members or people interested in our historic Club. So please pass it back to the Chapters when you are finished.

We’re not perfect!

Like the New York Times, The Log has its corrections. We apologize to Foundation scholar Harmonie Kobanghe for misspelling her last name. And, sorry that we listed Robert Palmer Wolfe’s alma mater as University of Miami. All good Ohioans know it is Miami University in Ohio.

The last shot

Suzanne Frye sent us this gorgeous shot from Banff, Canada. Beauty just north of the border!

autumnWelcome to Autumn!

The leaves they are a changin’!

This colorful photo was taken by Mark Hauptman in Alaska, and represents the beauty of the changing seasons on the North American continent. Do you have a great shot of the autumn leaves? Send it to us and we will put it on the web site.

We don’t want to forget our Club members in the UK and all over Europe, as well as Singapore and Australia, where the climate is a bit different. Luck to You, too!

Circumnavigators continue to traipse the globe at a prodigious level. Seems like everyone is going somewhere. We want to point out that Washington (DC) Chapter’s Ray Olson has just embarked on a trip to the Pacific Islands that will require 27 flights.

The Log will be coming out this month with lots of great stories, photos and news. Please contact headquarters if you do not receive your copy by the end of the month.

Please don’t throw your copy of The Log in the trash when you are finished reading it. Our Club publication is a great way to introduce others to the Circumnavigators Club, so we recommend that you turn in copies to your Chapter for future use.

We are happy to report that 30 new members have joined in the past several months, and our membership is growing.

Luck to you!
