Chapter Spotlight, On The Road Comments Off on Naples Chapter learned about Iran at April luncheon
Apr 142017

On Sunday, April 9th, 2017 the Naples Chapter presented its last speaker luncheon of the season, which was attended by 125 members and guests.  Our member Paula O’Connor gave a most interesting and detailed account of her recent trip to Iran.  Paula traveled the entire country with a group of people from the Naples Council of World Affairs. They saw all the important historical sights, as well as the modern cities with their great architecture.  Everywhere they went, they were met with the  friendliest of people.  Paula is eager to go back to Iran. Visit the Naples Chapter website for more photos.

Over the Horizon…

The life and memory of Anne Hughes were honored Thursday, March 23rd, at a service at New York City’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral and at a luncheon at  The Harvard Club.  A large contingent of Circumnavigators joined Anne’s family and wide circle of friends to pay tribute to a decades-long member who played a key role in our club’s development and history.

Ann Hughes “Around the World in Eighty Years”

Anne served terms as an executive board member in the role of secretary, was a multi-time member of the Board of Governors, chaired numerous committees and served as a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.  She also played a vital role as a contributing editor and proofreader of The LOG.

A native of New York City, Anne was educated at McGill University and later at Columbia University Graduate School.  She joined the United Nations in its infancy in the late 1940’s and had an illustrious 37-year career that included postings in Germany, Switzerland, Latin America and Africa.  Fluent in seven languages, her expertise and administrative skills were widely recognized by her colleagues.

After her retirement, Anne had a successful “second” career as an artist working from her studio along Central Park South.  She enjoyed writing and many of her plays have been produced.

Anne was the quintessential Circumnavigator; circling the globe three times.  Her 86th birthday was celebrated aboard the Trans-Siberian Express!

We’ll miss you, Anne. (written by Howard Matson)

More about Anne…Anne Hughes wrote a fascinating journal about her life and travels, shown above. She also was interviewed, along with C. Lois Kahan on a travel radio show. Circumnavigators will enjoy listening to this interview.

Travels by Circumnavigator Cynthia Bassett

Cynthia has made some informative DVDs of her world travels, which Club members will find interesting. She writes, “ I enjoy sharing my travels via DVDs to countries often on the cusp of change. Following roads least traveled, my photography and accompanying scripts capture the diverse histories and disappearing traditions of cultures before they are absorbed into a global, homogenized world.”

DVDs can be ordered through her website www.myraretravels.com or a request and check for $14.95 plus $2.83 shipping can be sent directly to: Cynthia Bassett Productions Inc., P.O Box 22011, Beachwood, OH 44122.

Five of the most recent DVDs are: 2012 & 2013 Neighbors: Yunnan & The Tibetan Plateau; 2011 Eurasian Gateway: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan; 2010 Bolivia: Bolivian Extremes From the Andes to the Amazon Basin; 2009 Tajikistan to Kyrgyzstan: The High Pamirs and Beyond; 2007 Mongolia: 800 Years Later and earlier DVDs can be viewed on the website.

Mar 152017

The Naples Chapter has held the March 12th luncheon, at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. We had a record turnout, with 145 members and guests attending. Our special speaker Albert Podell came from New York, to tell us all about the 196 countries that he had visited over 50 years. There were many spectacular pictures and much interesting commentary about his numerous adventures, for us to see and hear. It was a delightful, and humorous presentation, enjoyed by all.

Spring is on the way!

For most of the northern climes of the United States, this winter has been a Jekyll and Hyde of extremely bitter cold and unseasonable warmth. Now, it’s comforting to know that Spring is right around the corner. Many Circumnavigators took to the road during the winter, and many more are planning trips in the upcoming months. Please let us know about your travels, by emailing this writer at davidamink@me.com or our executive director Tracy Sancilio at club@circumnavigators.org. We are beginning plans for the next issue of The LOG for the late Spring and we will feature this info in our All Over the Map section.
