February 2017 Naples Chapter event

Chapter Spotlight, Events Comments Off on February 2017 Naples Chapter event
Feb 152017

On Sunday February 12th, 2017, the Naples Chapter members  gathered for their monthly meeting at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club.  The meeting was very well attended by 124 guests, who enjoyed the usual delicious luncheon, while looking out on the many sail boats and yachts in the harbor. However, the main event was the interesting presentation given by Bill Ashley from our Washington Chapter.  Bill spoke of his journey to Papua New Guinea, a country that is not very well known, nor travelled.  He also showed us many fantastic  looking pictures of the special tribal festival, which he was able to attend.   A truly rare event.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!…

Best wishes for a Happy New Year to all Circumnavigators, Family and Friends. Our Club has now entered its 115th year, and we look forward to another year of exciting travels and events. It is worth noting that when the new U.S. President is inaugurated later this month, there will have been 20 Presidents during the lifetime of the Club, beginning with Teddy Roosevelt. Astounding advances in travel and communications have made the world a lot smaller than in those years. On the other hand, political unrest and terrorism have made the world a lot larger, with many popular destinations now inaccessible. So, our Club mission is as important as ever — to make the world better through friendship and understanding.

John & Annie Glenn with Jeff & Elizabeth Kelly

FAREWELL TO JOHN GLENN…

The world lost a number of outstanding people in 2016, among them Circumnavigator John Glenn. In 2001, Senator Glenn received our highest honor, the Order of Magellan, in “recognition of his lifetime contributions to the exploration of space and leadership of his country.”  250 Circumnavigators and guests packed the Union League Club as President Jeff Kelly presented Senator Glenn with his award. The world lost a hero and statesman, and the Club lost one of its most prestigious members.

CIRCUMNAVIGATOR PARRISH FEATURED AGAIN…

Last month we reported that our prolific traveling Chicago Chapter member, Don Parrish, was featured in a major article in the German newspaper Die Zeit. Now the Chicago Tribune has run a wonderful piece on Don, recognizing his accomplishment as perhaps the most traveled person in the world. Click here to view the story (opens in a new window).

John Glenn Jr. was a famed Marine Corps aviator who was selected as one of the military test pilots for the American space program in the late 1950s and the 1960s. Apart from being the first American to orbit Earth and the fifth person in space, Glenn also participated in World War II and the Korean War. He spent 24 years in the U.S. Senate, representing Ohio. Andre Borschberg

Aviation pioneer to receive Order of Magellan…

The Club is pleased to announce that Swiss aviator and entrepreneur Andre Borschberg will be the next honoree to receive The Order of Magellan.  He and Bertrand Piccard, one of the Club’s 1999 Magellan recipients, completed their circumnavigation aboard the solar-powered Solar Impulse 2 aircraft in July 2016.  Using no fuel other than the sun’s energy, they demonstrated the capability of this “clean” technology.  The award will be presented to Andre Borschberg at a dinner in New York in the fall of 2017. Details will follow when arrangements are finalized.

The LOG is rolling…

The next issue of the Circumnavigators venerable publication is going in the mail. Members should be on the lookout for it to arrive in you mailboxes soon. This is a spectacular issue with great stories and photos from our members, as well as Club news and reports from our Foundation scholars. Please send us your comments and feedback when you read your copy. We had excellent participation from members for this issue.

Legendary Circumnavigator featured…

Don Parrish (Chicago Chapter), who is widely recognized as the most traveled person, was featured in a major two-page article in Die Zeit, probably the most prestigious newspaper in Germany. Unfortunately for English-only members, the piece is written in German and will not be published in English. The headline reads (in German): “No One has Seen more of the World than this Man.” The Circumnavigators Club is mentioned in the article under “Clubs Fur Vielreisende” (Clubs for the Well-Traveled). If you read German, there is a link to the article.

Do you have a web site of your own?

You can learn a lot more about Don Parrish on his web site, www.donparrish.com. Other members with web sites should send this information to us.

Get out those photos…

The Circumnavigators on-line Photo Contest and Exhibit will begin in January. Details will follow, but start digging into those great photos. The categories will be Human Interest, Architecture, Landscape and Flora & Fauna. All submitted photos will be posted on this web site. To see previous years, go to the tab on the Home Page for photos or click here. The contest will benefit the Circumnavigators Foundation.
