Holiday Spirit and a Special Celebration…

charlieCircumnavigators will join together for a holiday celebration and to honor illustrious member Charlie Blaisdell on his 100th Birthday. A past president and active in the Club for decades, Charlie hasn’t lost his sense of humor. At a recent gathering, he said he wanted to dispel the rumor that he was one of the Club founders! Charlie has lots of  great stories and it will be a treat to join him for this big event.

The party will be held on December 10 at the Explorers Club, located at 46 E 70th Street in New York City. Contact Tracy Sancilio at headquarters to make a reservation for this event, or use the form here. It will be a lot of fun in beautiful NYC during the holidays.

Journey to the White Continent

Chapter Spotlight, Events Comments Off on Journey to the White Continent

Circumnavigators Club members and guests enjoyed dinner and a program presented by C. Sue Murphy at O’Reilly’s Bar and Kitchen in New York City on October 14. Sue shared her “Journey to the White Continent” and dramatic photos of the remote region and wildlife discovered there. We were pleased to welcome members George and Kathleen Beebe from the Pacific-Southwest Chapter and John and Eileen Carey from Westchester, who recently applied for membership. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all!

oct15circumbitsDC Foundation Luncheon

The Washington DC Chapter held its annual Foundation luncheon on September 19. Circumnavigator Christopher Sinclair surprised International President Ellen Parke by presenting her with 12 vintage copies of The LOG, dating from 1911 to 1929. Christopher found them through an antique dealer in Atlanta. They will make a welcome addition to our Club archives and we thank Christopher for his generosity.

Send Your News for The LOG

The next issue of The LOG is in the works, scheduled for publication in early December. Please send us info for our column All Over the Map. We just need a sentence or two about members’ recent travels or upcoming trips. We also need information for Scuttlebutt. This is non-travel information about our members. For example, we congratulate UK Chapter President Helen Jenkins for her recent selection as one of the top 25 female financial advisors in the United Kingdom. The honor recognized her professional work and also her community service, including her dedicated work with the Circumnavigators. Finally, do you have a good story for The LOG?  Please send all info to us at info@circumnavigators.org.

Our new Blazer Badges are now available. These badges were handmade in Sialkot, Pakistan by a skilled craftsman. Sialkot, in the Punjab, has been the center of the world’s badge making industry since the 1800s. So, when you purchase a Circumnavigator Badge you can wear it with pride.  Not only because it represents our old and distinguished club, but knowing it comes from one of the most renowned badge-making families in the world, handmade in a 12th century city once part of the Mughal Empire. We now have a very limited number of badges, which cost $50 each. We will order more, depending on response, so let us know if you want one.

Photo Contest Winners Announced

Our highly successful Photo Contest is outlined in a following post on this page. Please make sure to review all the great photos here. Thank you to all participants for helping to raise funds for the Circumnavigators Foundation.

Thank you to all Circumnavigators who participated in the 2015 Photo Event. We raised well over $1000 for the Foundation and uncovered some fantastic photographs to share with our membership.

Congratulations to Suzanne Frye (New York Metro) for her outstanding shot of Camels on the Beach at Sunset, which won Best Overall Shot.

All of the category winners and all submitted photos are now available for viewing on this site. The links are below. For the record, this was the greatest number of photos submitted, and the quality was amazing. It was very difficult to pick the best from so many great photos.

A word or two about the judging. Three professional photographers and four serious amateur photographers did the judging. All of the shots were judged “anonymously” so that the judges did not know who took the photos. Judges who had submitted entries were not allowed to vote for their own photos. The judges were asked to pick four shots from each category. The selections by the judges were very diverse. The only shot selected by every judge was Suzanne’s photo.

The judges commented that the entries were outstanding and congratulated all of the “Circumphotogs”!

View the photo galleries here, including who won 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. The categories are:

Farewell, Summer…

nkoreaWhere has it gone? As usual, Circumnavigators were all over the map this summer, although our travels are anything but seasonal. Ray Olson (Washington DC Chapter) has reported in from North Korea. The photo shows Ray and his group at the mausoleum in Pyongyang which displays the bodies of former leaders Kim Il Song and Kim Jong Il. No photos were allowed inside. Ray mentions that there is a recent fascinating article about similar “glass” coffins in the Washington Post…New Yorker Sue Murphy, Club secretary and governor, took her Club cap on a tour of Italy, Croatia, Turkey and Greece. If you are under 60, you might have to google “Kilroy was here”, but our Club cap has made a Kilroy journey through the region.

Julianne McLean

Our condolences to Angela McLean…

Julianne McLean, mother of Club Governor Angela McLean, passed away recently in Wichita, Kansas. Julianne, a remarkable woman and concert pianist, was a survivor of the sinking of the Andrea Doria in 1956. She spoke on the tragic incident to the Circumnavigators Club in 2006 on the 50th Anniversary of the sinking. Her story was featured in a recent issue of The LOG which you can find here.

Circumnavigators Photo Exhibit & Contest…

Thanks to the many Club members who submitted photos for this event. More than $1000 was raised for the Circumnavigators Foundation. Our members will enjoy viewing the many outstanding photos. The “winners” will be announced in The LOG Express, coming out later this month. After the announcement, all entries will be available for view on the Club web site.

The Last Shot

We are giving our Last Shot to International President and Washington Nationals “fanatic” Ellen Parke. This sunset at Nationals Park was taken as Ellen remained hopeful that the Nationals might make the playoffs. Our apologies to all our Circumnavigators who are Mets fans.
