Adventurer Speaks…

After the official meeting, Adventurer and Author Albert Podell gave a fascinating presentation to members and guests. With hundreds of photos, he spread his wit and wisdom, recounting stories from his decades of world travel. There will be more about Albert in the next issue of The LOG. Members might be interested in reading about him on his web site www.albertpodell.com.

Can you identify this photo?…
During his presentation, Albert asked for help to identify a photo, the only one of his thousands that he cannot recall. He has shown this photo to more than 20 groups and no one has been able to help. He has hopes that a Circumnavigator might be able to come up with the right answer. Let us know if you can make the ID.

250 Global Attractions: How many have you seen?

The website www.listchallenges.com has a challenge that will appeal to Circumnavigators. Click on the link to complete this easy-to-use survey of (in their opinion) 250 top global attractions. Send your results to us by email to club@circumnavigators.org. You can send it with your name or anonymously and we will publish the results in the next LOG. A few members have already taken it and, so far, 151 is the top score. We are sure this can be topped.

Special issue on Astronaut Scott Kelly timekelly

Honorary member Scott Kelly is one of eleven Magellan honorees who have been featured on the cover of Time magazine. Now Time has devoted a special issue about Scott and his year in space. It makes interesting reading. Congratulations to Scott for his amazing achievement and his latest honor.

Solar Impulse 2 back in the air

solarimpulse4

After a delay for repairs, the crew of Solar Impulse 2 is on its way again in their attempt to circumnavigate in an aircraft powered only by solar energy. Pilot Bertrand Piccard, an honorary member and Magellan honoree,  completed the second-most difficult leg from Hawaii to California. It took Amelia Earhart 18 hours to make this journey. It took Solar Impulse 2 nearly 63 hours to do it without fuel, 81 years later. Bertrand described the difficulty of this dangerous leg of the circumnavigation, during which he got little sleep and battled the cold. He and his copilot, Andre Borschberg, expect to complete their circumnavigation, in Abu Dhabi later this year. Follow the mission on www.solarimpulse.com as it crosses the U.S. and the Atlantic Ocean toward its destination.

A tribute to Charlie…

Circumnavigator and New Yorker Brad Vogel had a piece published in the New York Times Metropolitan Diary column about the 100th birthday celebration for Past President Charlie Blaisdell at a Club event in December.  Read it here.

Over the Horizon…

We are sorry to report the passing of Evelyn Peterson. As past president Howard Matson writes: “Evelyn truly exemplified the title of ‘First Lady’ of the Circumnavigators Club. Along with her late husband (Past President) Bob, she was held in the highest regard and esteem by all of the Club’s members.” The Petersons were very active in the Club and Foundation as philanthropists, volunteers and hosts. Evelyn died on January 8 at her home in Palm Beach, Florida. Our deepest sympathy to her sons Jeffrey, Bill, and Kent.

Matt and Shaesta

Matt Guthmiller and Shaesta Waiz

Aviators get together…

Our own Matt Guthmiller, world record holder as the youngest person to fly solo around the world, recently met with Shaesta Waiz, who is setting off later this year on her attempt to become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world. The two met with Circumnavigator and Club governor Angela McLean in Wichita, Kansas. Matt later flew to Naples, Florida, and addressed the Naples Chapter.

Magellan honoree and honorary member Scott Kelly on his year in space took this stunning shot of Italy and the Alps.
