He plays a key and active role in the Foundation, serving as our Honorary President and a member of the Board of Directors. Charlie has been a great friend and mentor to many over the years and we look forward to celebrating this very special birthday!

Circumnavigators Club members and guests enjoyed dinner and a program presented by C. Sue Murphy at O’Reilly’s Bar and Kitchen in New York City on October 14. Sue shared her “Journey to the White Continent” and dramatic photos of the remote region and wildlife discovered there. We were pleased to welcome members George and Kathleen Beebe from the Pacific-Southwest Chapter and John and Eileen Carey from Westchester, who recently applied for membership. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all!

Goodwill Reception

The Circumnavigators Club International Weekend began with a Goodwill Reception on Friday, April 10 at the Army and Navy Club in Washington DC where out of town members and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening.

Magellan Award

On April 11, members and guest from around the globe came to honor retired ABC News Correspondent Ann Compton. The gala event was held at the historic Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. The evening began with a wonderful cocktail hour where members and guests had a chance to meet Ann Compton and enjoy each other’s company. Once John Philip Sousa’s Circumnavigators Club March was played, everyone was seated for dinner in the Warne Ballroom. International President Ellen Parke welcomed members and guests to this historic event. In attendance were Club Officers and Board Members, Past Presidents Bill Holm, Howard Matson and Al Morasso; Chapter Presidents Dan Peterson (Chicago), Samuel Waton (Washington DC); and Foundation Scholar Kevin Short.

Following dinner, Past President and Magellan Award Committee Chair Howard Matson gave his introductory remarks and called to the podium the Officers, Governors, Past Presidents, Chapter Presidents and representatives of the Circumnavigators Club to present the Order of Magellan to Ann Compton. Ann Compton gave an extraordinary address to close the wonderful evening.

Circumnavigators in the News…

Scott Kelly with Dottie Mink at Award Ceremony

2012 Order of Magellan recipient and honorary member Scott Kelly has arrived at the International Space Station at the beginning of his year in space. NASA has poetically termed his mission a test of the limits of “human research, space exploration and human spirit”. When Kelly received the Club’s highest honor, he talked about his upcoming year in space and its challenges. Scott’s co-honoree, twin brother Mark Kelly, will be monitored on earth to compare the physical differences with his brother. Follow this link for more on Scott.

Our 1999 Order of Magellan honoree Bertrand Piccard in now on his historic attempt to circumnavigate onboard Solar Impulse 2, the first solar powered aircraft. Along with Andre Borchberg, the pioneers are now headed over the Himalayas for China, then the most perilous part of the trip across the Pacific Ocean. If all goes as planned, the circumnavigation will take five months. We will be tracking Solar Impulse along the way. Luck to you, Scott, Bertrand and Andre!!

(UPDATE: Solar Impulse 2 has landed safely in China.)

Magellan Event in Washington DC…

Congratulations to Naples…

The Naples Chapter recently held a successful fundraising event for the Circumnavigators Club Foundation. Artist, Author & Photographer Helene Gaillet de Neergaard gave a wonderful presentation. Foundation grantee and Dean of Brandeis University Bruce Magid traveled from snowy Boston to Naples to represent the Foundation.

The Naples Chapter warmly welcomed International Officers and Board of Directors on March 7th with a cocktail reception at the home of member Lee Abrons. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all. On March 8th, Officers and Board of Governors joined at the Club Pelican Bay for a board meeting followed by a delicious brunch and presentation by member Jerry Lawrence, “What’s it like to be the doctor for an Olympic team?”
