Kenai King 7-2-08To All Circumnavigators in the cold climates, welcome to spring! You deserve a break from the past winter.

This month, the Club is preparing for it Annual Meeting at headquarters in the Yale Club. We have an exciting speaker for the event, Kip Knudson who will present “Around the World and North to the Future.” It’s the story of how a Circumnavigator Foundation grant led to a life in Alaska.

The meeting will be held on Friday, May 30, beginning at noon. Members will be receiving invitations, as well as ballots, in the mail, and we hope many can join us for a weekend in New York City.

The next issue of The Log will be arriving next month. There is still time to get a blurb in about your recent or planned trips for “All Over the Map” column or any news for Scuttlebutt. Please send a line or two to Tracy by email to Headquarters.

Luck to you!

DC Chapter Luncheon held Feb. 11

Chapter Spotlight, Events, Foundation, On The Road, The Blog Comments Off on DC Chapter Luncheon held Feb. 11
Feb 272014

Japan and Japanese food was the focus of a grand luncheon among D.C. Chapter members in late February.  Our Asian food tastes are expanding with recent luncheons featuring Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean and now Japanese cuisine.  Mica Dumas from the Japan-American Society came dressed in a traditional kimono and gave a slide presentation of Japanese society, culture, food, and sights.  She lived in Japan for 13 years and then 7 years in Germany: a real world traveler.  As an added treat, each of us received a genuine Japanese red fan, and a Japanese New Year red envelope with good luck coin.

Harmonie Kobanghe, our 2014 Foundation Grantee told the Chapter about her planned circumnavigation and her study of the role of women in improving agricultural economies by increased land tenure.  She is the first French citizen chosen from Georgetown University for a Foundation grant; her family was originally from the Congo.

And, we had a short talk from Alex Bijol from Bled, Slovenia, a guest of Bill Ashley.  Alex told us about Slovenia and the thrill of his first visit to the United States.  We discussed plans for a Persian Nowruz spring party but had to cancel it as the musicians and dancers decided not to come to the restaurant to perform this year.  We are looking at other events for our annual ‘Spring into Summer’ luncheon.

We held our biannual elections, reelecting Samuel Watson as president, Jennifer Teague as vice president and treasurer, and electing Samuel McAleese as our new secretary, all for two years.  Sam McAleese was a Foundation grantee from the Chicago Chapter.

Recent travelers included Ray Olson going to Kuwait and the ‘lovely’ Kuwait International Airport and also to Thailand; Bill Ashley went on several Caribbean cruises over the Christmas holidays; Betsy and Emil Ruderfer went to Chile and Argentina over the New Year holidays; and, Virginia May took another Caribbean cruise (one of many she has taken on Cunard ships to the Caribbean and around the world).

Goodwill Reception – (photos here)

The Circumnavigators Club International Weekend began with a Goodwill Reception on Thursday, January 16, at the home of Past President Jeff Kelly and his wife Elizabeth in New York City, where members and guests from Chapters throughout the United States enjoyed a wonderful evening.

Magellan Dinner – (photos here)

On January 17, members and guest from around the globe came to honor the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States, Sandra Day O’Connor. The gala event was held at the historic Union League Club in New York City. The evening began with a wonderful cocktail hour in the library where members and guests had a chance to meet Justice O’Connor and enjoy each other’s company. Once Sousa’s Circumnavigators Club March was played, everyone was seated for dinner in Lincoln Hall. International President Peter Mosse welcomed members and guests to this historic event. In attendance were Club Officers and Board Members, Past Presidents Bill Holm, Jeff Kelly, Howard Matson and Al Morasso; Chapter Presidents Angela Addario (Boston), Dan Peterson (Chicago), Barbara Roy (Naples); and Foundation Scholars Margaret Hutzel, Kip Knudson, Joshua Laurito and Kevin Short. New members Martin Baltus, Sarah Morgan, Kevin Short and Gordon Whiting were presented with membership certificates. President Peter Mosse recognized attendees for their years of membership in the Club with stars on their name tags signifying at least 10, 20 and 30 years of membership. Foundation Scholars were also recognized. Please see the list of recognized members below.

Following dinner, Past President and Magellan Award Committee Chair Howard Matson gave his introductory remarks and called to the podium the Officers, Governors, Past Presidents, Chapter Presidents and representatives of the Circumnavigators Club to present the Order of Magellan to Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor gave an extraordinary address on her experience in the Supreme Court and her continued effort to promote civics in the classroom. Justice O’Connor developed a website – www.icivics.org in support of this effort. At the end of the evening, Justice O’Connor graciously offered to personally sign her book Out of Order for members and guests. A wonderful evening was shared by all.

Congratulations to our loyal members of 10, 20 and 30 years!
