Dinner with Bertrand Piccard at Yale Club
Past Presidents and members of the Board of Governors of the Circumnavigators Club welcomed 1999 Magellan Award Recipient, Bertrand Piccard on September 19th at a dinner at the Yale Club in New York City.

Club members toured historic ship
Circumnavigators and guests toured the newly restored historic Wavertree Ship at the South Street Seaport in New York City on September 27th. Captain Jonathan Boulware, Executive Director of the Seaport Museum, led a guided tour followed by dinner at the India House. Captain Boulware’s presentation left guests with a newfound appreciation of the life of the ship Wavertree and the importance of the South Street Seaport to modern New York City.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of long time member and Past President of the Desert Chapter, Park A. Shaw and Past President of the Palm Beach Chapter John P. Veasy (Jack). They will be greatly missed.

This column features the comings and goings of our membership. Just drop us a couple of lines about your recent or upcoming travels. As always, a photograph will be appreciated, but not necessary. If you want a feature story for consideration, let us know details of a trip that would interest our readers.

Captain Jonathan Boulware, Executive Director of the Seaport Museum, is an enthusiastic advocate for the contemporary relevance of New York’s maritime history. A passionate educator, Capt. Boulware will spin the tale of the 1885 full-rigged ship Wavertree, a circumnavigator herself, and put the ship and the recently completed $13M restoration in the context of modern New York. Part autobiography of his time at sea, part storytelling, and part maritime history, Capt. Boulware’s presentation will leave guests with a newfound appreciation of the life of the ship Wavertree and the importance of the South Street Seaport to modern New York City. The evening will begin with a guided tour of the ship at Pier 16 in the East River, including key aspects of current restoration. Please wear practical shoes (no heels) and plan for steep ladders and stairs. Meet at Wavertree’s gangway on Pier 16 itself.

Young Aviator set for solo circumnavigation
Shaesta Walz, who recently met with Club Governor Angela McLean and member Matt Guthmiller, is embarking on a venture this fall which, if successful, will make her the youngest woman to fly solo around the world. Members can learn more about Shaesta on her web site www.dreamssoar.org. Please consider making a tax-free charitable donation to help her on her daring mission.

The Last Shot
In the next month, many Circumnavigator “snow birds” will leave the north and head for warmer climes. This glorious sunset was shot at the home of Naples Chapter member Pat Classen and beckons us to Florida. The Naples Chapter held its end-of-summer retreat, with 68 members attending.

Congratulations to the Solar Impulse 2 team!Mission Complete…
Bertrand Piccard, recipient of the Club’s 1999 Order of Magellan for his circumnavigation by hot air balloon, landed the solar-powered aircraft, the Solar Impulse 2, in Abu Dhabi on July 26, 2016. Piccard and his fellow Swiss pilot, Andre Borschberg, began their round-the-world journey in March 2015. Taking turns piloting the single-seat plane, they made the trip in 16 legs without using any fuel. The trip had been interrupted for nine months because the batteries were damaged during the longest leg — five days from Japan to Hawaii. In interviews on Tuesday, Piccard expressed his belief that the accomplishment demonstrates that clean technologies can be adapted to make the world more energy efficient.
Singapore Chapter
The Singapore Chapter held its annual mid-year dinner at the fabulous Sentosa Golf Club. A delicious dinner and excellent band accompanied by members singing their hearts out.

We hope you have enjoyed the latest copy of The LOG. The staff appreciates feedback and comments from Circumnavigators, so let us know what you think! Remember you can also read The LOG on this website. The issue had a great story by Circum Fred Myers about his circumnavigation on a weekend. We neglected that the woman chatting with Fred in the photo is Summer Bartholomew, Miss U.S.A. for 1975. Fred notes that “her charm, good looks and sense of adventure made her a hit with everyone on the flight. In fact, in later years she went on to do well as an actress.”

Author and Adventurer Albert Podell, who addressed our Annual Meeting in May, is now a member of the Club. We welcome this outstanding world traveler to our ranks. Albert’s best-selling book is now available in paperback, and can be purchased online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as at independent bookstores. Circumnavigators will enjoy this witty and intriguing tale.

The next issue of The LOG, scheduled for the end of the year, will feature photos and stories from Lands of Snow and Ice. So send us some of your best snowy, icy photos.
