Are you coming to New York?

matt

The Club’s Annual Meeting will be held on Friday, May 29, at our headquarters at the Yale Club in NYC. It is always a great time to socialize with members and keep involved with the Club’s news. The meeting will be held at 11:30. After the meeting, which is open to members only, a light lunch and presentation will be held, and guests are welcome. RSVP form and details here.

We are very excited that our youngest member and the youngest person to circumnavigate solo in a single-engine plane, Matt Guthmiller will be our speaker. Matt, 20, is a MIT student and his talk and photos are sure to be fascinating.

Magellan Event a big success!

Ground-breaking journalist Ann Compton received the Club’s highest honor, the Order of Magellan, at a gala event in Washington DC in April. Ann wowed the crowd of members and guests with her stories of covering seven presidents for ABC News for more than 40 years. Of particular interest, she told the poignant story of being with President Bush on September 11, 2001. See photos here.

Last call for The Log

The Log will be coming out in June, and we are still looking for member info for our All Over the Map and Scuttlebutt columns. Just drop us a line to club@circumnavigators.org about where you have traveled or where you are planning to go, or info about events in your life. Any award or honors, published books or photos or the like?

Kathmandu…

Many of our members have visited the wonderful country of Nepal, and it is with great sorrow that we reflect on the devastating earthquake that took so many lives, and destroyed the distinctive architecture of Kathmandu. This writer has been there many times over the past several decades and always loved the charm of the city and the friendliness of the people. On my last trip, I stayed at the beautiful Dwarika hotel, built with bits and pieces of historic architecture. Unable to contact my friends in Nepal, I don’t know whether this hotel still stands. Please consider making a donation to help the Nepalese through the many organizations, such as the Red Cross.

Magellan Award

On April 11, members and guest from around the globe came to honor retired ABC News Correspondent Ann Compton. The gala event was held at the historic Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. The evening began with a wonderful cocktail hour where members and guests had a chance to meet Ann Compton and enjoy each other’s company. Once John Philip Sousa’s Circumnavigators Club March was played, everyone was seated for dinner in the Warne Ballroom. International President Ellen Parke welcomed members and guests to this historic event. In attendance were Club Officers and Board Members, Past Presidents Bill Holm, Howard Matson and Al Morasso; Chapter Presidents Dan Peterson (Chicago), Samuel Waton (Washington DC); and Foundation Scholar Kevin Short.

Following dinner, Past President and Magellan Award Committee Chair Howard Matson gave his introductory remarks and called to the podium the Officers, Governors, Past Presidents, Chapter Presidents and representatives of the Circumnavigators Club to present the Order of Magellan to Ann Compton. Ann Compton gave an extraordinary address to close the wonderful evening.

The Log needs your help!

Veranasi

The next issue of The Log is in the works, and, as always, we need contributions from Circumnavigators.

Here are some things you can do:

Do you have a good photo for our photo spread or, perhaps, for the cover? The photo spread will have a “faces” theme, such as the one taken here by Roger Baker on a recent trip to India. If you have a good shot of someone you have encountered on your travels, please submit it for consideration. It does not have to be recent. Send your photo by email attachment to club@circumnavigators.org.

Regarding Roger’s photo, it was taken in Varanasi. Notice the pre-photo gratuity that the gentleman is holding his hand!

Let us know about your travels. Our All Over the Map column features the recent travels of our members. Send us a line or two about where you have traveled or where you are going. Photos of members “on the road” are welcome.

Also, the Scuttlebutt column reports news about members. Let us know if you have moved to a new location, gotten a degree, written a book, been honored by an organization. Photos welcome.

Do you have a travel story to share? Story ideas from members are always encouraged. Let us know if you have a story that can be developed into a piece for The Log. Please do not send completed stories. We will work with you to put it together.
