Happy 4th of July

Best wishes for a great holiday to our American members, and, of course, Best Wishes to our Singapore and United Kingdom members as well as other nationalities.

Stars and Stripes

The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia is having an amazing exhibit of 40 rare 13-star flags. This writer highly recommends a visit if you can get to Philly (an easy train ride from NYC and Washington DC). The Exhibit runs until July 21.

Believe it or Not

Did you know that the Circumnavigators Club was instrumental in the creation of the U.S. National Anthem? Most everyone knows about Francis Scott Key and the morning when the “Flag was still there.” It was a patriotic song for decades but not the National Anthem. In 1929, Circumnavigator Robert (Believe it or Not) Ripley drew a cartoon that bewailed the fact that America had no anthem. This spurred letters of demand by five million Americans to give this honor to the Star Spangled Banner. Circumnavigator John Philip Sousa, who knew a little bit about patriotic music, took up its cause and gave it his blessing in 1931. Later that year President Herbert Hoover (who later became a Circumnavigator) signed it into law. This is another amazing tidbit in the history of the Circumnavigators Club.

It seems like yesterday, but it is now 50 years since man set foot on the moon. Just about everyone who was around at that time remembers where they were at the historic moment. Space pioneer Robert Crippen, our 2019 Magellan honoree, recalls that he was interviewing that day for a new job with NASA. He was so impressed by the moon landing and the  space mission of NASA that he wanted to join its ranks, resulting in four flights into space. It should be noted that Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, was our Magellan honoree in 1971.

Helen Jenkins (UK Chapter President) caught up with Magellan honoree and aviation pioneer Bertrand Piccard at the Million Dollar Round Table annual convention in Miami. The MDRT is a global association of financial advisors. Helen was on the platform committee and listened to more than 600 speeches over the past year to help choose the platform speakers. She reports, “Knowing Bertrand and having heard him speak before, I recommended him as an inspirational and motivational speaker. He was brilliant, presenting images of his journeys and explorations. His talk was called Changing Altitude. It was good for me to catch up with him again and have dinner together.”
