Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

Best wishes to Members and friends for a delightful summer. Please send us one or two of your best “summer” photos. We will run them on this web site and a jury selection will pick four to run in the upcoming Log Express. Send your photos by email to Tracy at club@circumnavigators.org.

Also, send us a line or two about your recent travels for our All Over the Map feature.

Naples Circumnavigators and friends held a birthday celebration for Tom Maher,  International board member and long-time Naples stalwart. Tom turned 95! And he hasn’t slowed down a bit as he continues to travel the world and enjoy life. Congratulations, Tom.

On July 2, an intimate group of NY Metro Circumnavigators had a chance to meet and dine with Riaan Manser and Vasti Geldenhuys, two South Africans who just completed the adventure of crossing from Africa to North America in a rowboat. The meeting was held at Club Headquarters in the Yale Club. Photo below, with more details to follow.

Finally, we have a limited number of Circumnavigator caps for our members. The high-quality caps come in both white and black, and they have the attention-getting Club logo on the front. They provide a subtle way of getting the world out about our historic organization. The caps are $10, plus $2 for mailing. Let Tracy know if you want one or two.

Luck to you!!

2014 Summer The Log

2014 Summer The Log

The Log, with its distinctive two-lion cover, is now in members’ hands. If you did not receive your copy, please contact Tracy at headquarters. The cover shot was taken by Naples Chapter member Roger Weatherburn Baker.

The Log staff would appreciate feedback and suggestions. It is important that members give us information for two running sections—All Over the Map and Scuttlebutt.

A new feature will be the column “Where in the world is…”. The recent Log spotlighted Kyzyl, the city at the center of Asia. Have you been to a spot that even the most savvy Circumnavigators might not recognize? Let us know and it might make the publication.

Have a great summer, and Luck to you!

Gulfshore Life magazine has an article about the Club….

A Travel Club for the Truly Adventurous

by David Sendler

You learn the darnedest things just chatting with people at parties here. At one such event, I ran into Moira Fennessey and pretty soon she was telling me about her membership in the Circumnavigators Club of Naples. It seems we have 125 local people who have traveled all the way around the globe in one direction (you can do it in more than one segment) and love to tell each other about their adventures.

And, boy, are there stories…..

unnamedApril showers bring May flowers, and we hope our members, especially those in the northern part of America, will enjoy a beautiful spring after that tough winter.

At the end of May, our Club leadership will have some big changes after the Annual Meeting is held in New York City on May 30, beginning at noon. The official meeting will held for members only. After the meeting adjourns at about 1 PM, guests will be welcome to join in for lunch and a presentation from Kip Knudson, former grantee and now Alaskan official.

International President Peter J.C. Mosse is stepping down after a two-year term. The membership thanks Peter for his leadership and commitment to our Club organization and values. Peter is a long-term member who has held a variety of important positions in the Club. He can be assured that the calls will continue to come for his help and advice.

We will welcome his successor, Ellen Parke, former First Vice President, to take over the leadership. Congratulations and good luck, Ellen.

Coming in the next couple of weeks will be the latest issue of The Log. It is filled with outstanding stories, photos and news. Please contact Tracy at headquarters if you do not receive a copy. An email blast will be sent to all members (with email addresses) when the Log goes in the mail.

As work begins on upcoming issues of The Log and Log Express, please let us know if you have any good stories to contribute.

Luck to you!!

Goodwill Reception – (photos here)

The Circumnavigators Club International Weekend began with a Goodwill Reception on Thursday, January 16, at the home of Past President Jeff Kelly and his wife Elizabeth in New York City, where members and guests from Chapters throughout the United States enjoyed a wonderful evening.

Magellan Dinner – (photos here)

On January 17, members and guest from around the globe came to honor the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States, Sandra Day O’Connor. The gala event was held at the historic Union League Club in New York City. The evening began with a wonderful cocktail hour in the library where members and guests had a chance to meet Justice O’Connor and enjoy each other’s company. Once Sousa’s Circumnavigators Club March was played, everyone was seated for dinner in Lincoln Hall. International President Peter Mosse welcomed members and guests to this historic event. In attendance were Club Officers and Board Members, Past Presidents Bill Holm, Jeff Kelly, Howard Matson and Al Morasso; Chapter Presidents Angela Addario (Boston), Dan Peterson (Chicago), Barbara Roy (Naples); and Foundation Scholars Margaret Hutzel, Kip Knudson, Joshua Laurito and Kevin Short. New members Martin Baltus, Sarah Morgan, Kevin Short and Gordon Whiting were presented with membership certificates. President Peter Mosse recognized attendees for their years of membership in the Club with stars on their name tags signifying at least 10, 20 and 30 years of membership. Foundation Scholars were also recognized. Please see the list of recognized members below.

Following dinner, Past President and Magellan Award Committee Chair Howard Matson gave his introductory remarks and called to the podium the Officers, Governors, Past Presidents, Chapter Presidents and representatives of the Circumnavigators Club to present the Order of Magellan to Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor gave an extraordinary address on her experience in the Supreme Court and her continued effort to promote civics in the classroom. Justice O’Connor developed a website – www.icivics.org in support of this effort. At the end of the evening, Justice O’Connor graciously offered to personally sign her book Out of Order for members and guests. A wonderful evening was shared by all.

Congratulations to our loyal members of 10, 20 and 30 years!
